Today is May 1st, which is a Holiday in Costa Rica. On each May 1st of
the year, the President delivers his vision for the country.
In the United States we would call this a "State of the Union" address. Given that it is a national holiday, all government offices and banks will be closed.
Historically it is also a day of demonstrations and protests in Costa Rica (again, it is a holiday so no one is working and therefore, it is easy to do). The last couple of years protests against CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement or TLC in Costa Rica) was the main target by the protesters. The TLC was was passed in October 2007 (click here to read my blog from the day) and it is expected that the number of demonstrators will be considerably smaller this year.
Costa Ricans continue to do very well compared to not only their Central American neighbors, but also compared to other countries throughout the world.
Their life-expectancy in 2007 shot past that of the United States, the government continues to invest heavily in infrastructural upgrades, new hospitals and education.
I look forward to reading the transcript of President Arias' speech and I will post some of his messages here when they are available.
